On behalf of the Tulsa Juneteenth Inc. Board of Directors and the collaborative Planning Committee, we would like to extend a heart-felt thank you for your commitment to making Tulsa Juneteenth 2019 a successful event.

Due to CDC recommendations to prevent spreading COVID-19, and uncertainty about large public gatherings in the near term, the Tulsa Juneteenth Planning Committee has made the difficult decision to postpone the annual Juneteenth celebration to June 18-20, 2021.

While Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom, emphasizes education, and celebrates the rich heritage of Greenwood, the new health precautions and need for social distancing has limited our ability to create a multi-arts experience that will be safe for our audience.

Although we cannot celebrate in person this year, we encourage everyone to use #IAMJUNETEENTH and #TulsaTogether to share how you plan to honor Juneteenth while social distancing.

Our committee at Tulsa’s Juneteenth Celebration thanks you for your continued support through these difficult times and looks forward to bringing Juneteenth back in 2021.

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Celebrated in June, Juneteenth is a great cultural celebration that takes place in many cities across the nation, and has been celebrated in Tulsa for over 20 years.

A team of community-based organizations and community members came together to create the collaborative Tulsa Juneteenth Planning Committee four years ago. Last year, attendance exceeded our expectations and demonstrated the significance of this historical celebration returning to the African-American community on Greenwood Ave.  This celebration takes place in the Heart of the Historic Greenwood District and throughout the IDL, Tulsa Juneteenth Celebration will take place June 18 - 20, 2021. The Board of Directors’ goal is to create a multi-arts experience that recognizes and celebrates the rich heritage of Juneteenth.

In celebration and honor of Juneteenth, Tulsa Juneteenth, Inc, is implementing a weekend of entertainment that includes a celebration of music with nationally-acclaimed artists, Open Mic, Visual Art, educational workshops, performances by local artists and an exclusive VIP Sponsor Party. This celebration is a community driven event that brings together people from all over Tulsa, making this an event for all wanting to celebrate or learn.
